Mysore, officially known as Mysuru, stands out as one of South India’s most captivating cities. It’s a place where the rich heritage of sandalwood carving, silk production, and incense-making thrives alongside an abundance of palaces and lush gardens. Unlike many rapidly modernizing Indian cities, Mysore has gracefully preserved its old-world charm, untouched by the IT boom or its more recent status as a global yoga hub.
Planning Your Mysore Adventure: Essential Tips & Ideas
To help you make the most of your visit, I’ve put together some key insights and suggestions for exploring this beautiful city.
Best Travel Tips for Visiting Mysore
Beyond its famous landmarks, Mysore is a fantastic city to explore on foot. You’ll find a captivating atmosphere as you wander past colonial-era buildings lining streets like Ashoka Road and Sayaji Rao Road, hinting at a glamorous past. However, be prepared for a bit of a sensory overload when you first arrive; the city’s lively rhythm, with its constant flow of buses and bullock carts, can be quite a jolt!

Best Things to Do in Mysore
Mysore offers a wealth of experiences, from awe-inspiring palaces to tranquil yoga retreats.
1. Marvel at the Majestic Mysuru Palace
The heart of Mysore is undeniably dominated by the magnificent Mysuru Palace. This “fairytale” palace, crowned with a gleaming brass-plated dome, is a sight to behold. It truly comes alive on Sunday evenings and during festivals when nearly 100,000 light bulbs illuminate its facade. The current palace, completed in 1912 for the 24th Wadiyar raja, replaced an older wooden structure that was destroyed by fire in 1897. While the Karnataka state government officially took control of the main palace in 1998 after a legal battle, the royal family continues to assert its claim. Surrounding the palace are twelve temples, some of which are incredibly ancient.
2. Explore the Residential Museum
Step into the Residential Museum, located within the private living quarters of the current royal heir. Here, you’ll discover a fascinating collection of royal treasures, including paintings, musical instruments, children’s toys, furniture, wedding trousseaux, and weaponry.
3. Admire Art at the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery
Originally built in 1861 as the Jaganmohan Palace, this three-story edifice served as a royal residence until 1915. Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV then transformed it into the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery and museum. Most of the “modern” works on display date back to the 1930s, a pivotal period that saw a resurgence in Indian painting.
4. Discover Tribal Heritage at the Government Museum
Housed in a two-story building that once accommodated the Duke of Wellington, the Government Museum offers a deep dive into anthropology. The ground floor showcases photographs, artifacts, and jewelry from various tribal groups, primarily from the Himalayas and northeastern India. Upstairs, you’ll find a collection of statues and a modest selection of contemporary art. Don’t miss the large terracotta sculptures scattered around the grounds.
5. Visit One of India’s Oldest Zoos
Officially known as the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysuru Zoo is celebrated as one of India’s oldest and finest. Established in 1882 and opened to the public in 1902, it spans 245 beautifully landscaped acres. The zoo provides spacious enclosures for a wide array of animals, including large mammals like leopards and tigers, as well as numerous bird and reptile species.
6. Take in Panoramic Views from Chamundi Hill Temple
About 12 km southeast of Mysore, Chamundi Hill is crowned by a temple dedicated to the goddess Chamundi (Durga), the patron deity of the Mysore rajas. She is revered for slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura. A bus ride will take you easily to the top, and the walk down takes about 30 minutes, though with over a thousand steps, your legs might feel a bit wobbly! Remember to bring water, especially if you’re descending during the warmer parts of the day. Inside the 12th-century temple, open to non-Hindus, you’ll find a solid gold figure of Chamundi. In the courtyard, a vibrantly colored statue of Mahishasura stands guard.
7. Embrace Your Inner Yogi
Mysore has a strong connection to yoga, making it an ideal place to deepen your practice.
- Ashtanga Yoga Institute: Located 3.5 km northwest of the city in Gokulam, this world-renowned institute, founded by the late Sri Pattabhi Jois, remains a pilgrimage site for Ashtanga devotees. Be aware that you’ll need to register for a minimum of one month and book at least two months in advance as drop-in classes are not offered.
- Other Gokulam Centers: The Gokulam neighborhood is home to other excellent yoga centers. Bharath Shetty’s IndeaYoga offers courses ranging from two to eight weeks, while Yoga Bharata welcomes “drop-ins” and provides courses from one to four weeks.
- Mysore Mandala Yogashala: Situated 3 km south of the city, this self-contained retreat offers excellent instruction, an organic cafe, a beautiful garden, cultural events, and convenient drop-in classes.
Best Areas to Stay in Mysore
Finding accommodation in Mysore is generally easy, except during the Dasara festival and the Christmas/New Year period, when popular places book up quickly and prices rise.
- Devaraja Mohalla: Located north of Mysuru Palace, this area offers a variety of affordable options.
- Jayalakshmipuram: This residential area boasts numerous hotels and guesthouses close to the city center, with some of the best choices found around Hansa Road.
- Gokulam: Southwest of the city center, Gokulam is a peaceful, green neighborhood known for its yoga and wellness retreats.
Best Restaurants and Bars
Mysore has a vibrant culinary scene with plenty of Indian restaurants and charming cafes.
- Vani Vilas Mohalla: This bustling neighborhood is a great spot to find local restaurants serving authentic Karnataka cuisine, along with some multi-cuisine options and cafes.
- Jayalakshmipuram: In this central district, you’ll discover a mix of Indian restaurants, vegetarian eateries, and even burger joints.
Getting Around Mysore
Navigating Mysore is quite straightforward, with several convenient transportation options.
- By Auto-rickshaw: These three-wheeled vehicles are readily available throughout the city. Always agree on the fare with the driver before you start your journey.
- By Taxi: Metered taxis and app-based services like Ola and Uber operate in Mysore, offering convenient point-to-point travel or options for exploring at your own pace.
- By Bus: Mysore boasts an extensive city bus network, making it easy to reach all major areas of interest to travelers.
When to Visit Mysore
The ideal time to visit Mysore is during the cooler, drier months.
- Best Time: October to March (winter and early spring) offers pleasant and comfortable weather for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Temperatures typically range from 15°C to 30°C, with refreshingly cool evenings. October is also when the grand Dasara festival takes place, a 10-day celebration featuring cultural performances, processions, and the stunning illumination of the palace.
- Hot Season: April to June brings high temperatures, often reaching up to 40°C, coupled with high humidity.
- Monsoon Season: July to September sees heavy rainfall, which can make outdoor activities challenging.
How Many Days Do You Need in Mysore?
To experience Mysore’s highlights, I recommend allocating 2-3 days. This gives you ample time to visit major attractions like Mysuru Palace, explore Chamundi Hill, visit Mysuru Zoo, wander through the lively Devaraja Market, and enjoy an evening at the enchanting Brindavan Gardens with its musical fountains.
If you have more time, consider extending your stay to 4-5 days. You could then explore the impressive Gothic-style St. Philomena’s Cathedral, take a leisurely stroll around Karanji Lake, and revisit the Jaganmohan Palace and Art Gallery.
Getting to Mysore
Most travelers arrive in Mysore by train or bus.
- By Train: The railway station is conveniently located 1.5 km northwest of the city center. For longer journeys, trains are an excellent option, often requiring a transfer in Bengaluru. The air-conditioned Shatabdi Express is the fastest service, continuing to Chennai. The Hampi Express runs daily via Bengaluru to Hosapete, and there are 2-5 daily express services to Hassan, with the Talguppa Intercity Express being the quickest.
- By Bus: Mysore has three bus stations. The Central (KSRTC) station, located near the city center, handles major long-distance and state services and has advance booking counters. The Private bus stand is about 1 km northwest of the Central station, where various agents can book private bus tickets.
